Our testers didn’t think the XC70 was the last word in excitement. But the cross-country version of Volvo’s traditional big estate impressed us inside with its design, materials and build quality. The leather upholstery and metal trim on our test vehicle felt particularly nice, and the dashboard is rock solid, even if a couple of testers thought the mass of controls was a bit confusing.
Stowage provision is excellent, though, with a particularly good glovebox, and the rear seats fold at the touch of a button to create a long and totally flat cargo floor. There are further good touches here, such as a pair of alloy rails carrying sliding fold-out lashing hooks.
Our testers all felt that the XC70 moves the game on in terms of flexibility, but there was less praise for its rear seats when you put people in them. Knee room isn’t an issue, but with smallish windows and a low roof line they feel a little too cramped and enclosed to be suitable for adults.
