It’s such a cliché, but the first thing you notice about the Hi-Lux is its bomb-proof build quality. Fit and finish in the cabin is first-class, even if the dash materials have a hard feel to them. They’re still better than some, and though the seats are a bit soft and stodgy none of our testers complained about their comfort. Oddment stowage is adequate without being eye-opening; the glovebox and door pockets are smallish, but the cubby box is decent and there are various other slots and trays.
Dash design is by and large good, clear and unfussy, though there are some controls positioned low-down and out of sight. At least they’re not critical ones unless you’re indulging in some serious off-roading, because they include the button for a locking rear diff. Praise be that such things still exist. Another off-road tradition being upheld here is an old-style transfer lever.
You could say the same, actually, about the space, or lack of it, in the rear seats; behind a tall driver, your knees are mashed into the back of the seat ahead, but with plenty of headroom there is space for an adult, albeit only for short journeys.
