Toyota Hi-Lux Invincible 200 review

1. Introduction

The special edition Invincible 200 is now the most powerful pick-up in Britain and represents a clear attempt by Toyota to restore the Hi-Lux to a class-leading position. But will a tuned 3.0-litre engine and a handful of extra equipment be enough to achieve this?
The Hi-Lux’s rise to the top of the lifestyle pick-up category has been pretty meteoric and is undoubtedly indicative of the fast-moving pace of the sector as a whole. If the vehicle were a football team, in the space of just two seasons it would have earned itself promotion from the Championship League and be chasing Man Utd or Chelsea for the Premiership title. After all, the Hi-Lux used to be considered a rather old school, underpowered truck compared to its dynamic, cutting edge rivals. Even as recently as 2006, the vehicle was lagging someway behind the hugely popular Navara and L200 models, though a rapid transformation the following year saw it win this magazine’s Pick-Up of 2007 awards, and were it not for the consummate all round abilities of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, it would have almost certainly repeated the feat in 2008.
