The Outback has moved relentlessly upmarket over the years, and our testers weren’t entirely convinced by the latest model’s premium pretensions. Toys galore don’t compensate for a cabin whose plastics and design fail to inspire; it’s solid enough, but failed to raise any excitement.
Part of the problem is that although the controls are laid out logically enough, they’re all grey-on-grey. As a result, the fascia comes across as a sea of plastic rather than a bank of switches.
We were more impressed with a decent amount of oddment stowage, and the rear seats fold down easily to leave a mainly flat floor. They’re not over-generous with knee room, though, but headroom is better than you’d expect.
