There’s been a new Octavia since the Scout idea first came out, and our testers reckoned its styling works well. One even called this the most convincing version of the new car.
Inside, the same no-nonsense approach means good, tough materials but less than effortless finesse. There’s a strong, functional feel to the cabin, but though the seating position provides loads of headroom it doesn’t feel light inside.
There’s not much stowage room, either, despite a useful dash-top box and deep oddment slot ahead of the gearstick. And folding the rear seats is unconvincing; the squabs tumble, feeling flimsy in the process, then the back folds near-flat to leave a load floor with a huge step in it. The rear section is very deep, though, so you can carry much taller cargo than the Scout’s outward appearance would have you expect.Overall, as you’d expect from a modern Skoda it’s super-competent. None of our testers found it classy, but all raved about its value.
