MITSUBISHI ASX review

1. To Live With

One of the most recent additions to the 4x4 market, the ASX has been compared to the Nissan Qashqai but is in reality more car-like than even that. Its styling is inspired by Mitsubishi’s rally-bred Evo line, while its interior bears a more than passing resemblance to the Outlander.

That means the same plastics and dials, which are robust enough but don’t create much excitement. The dashboard is laid out perfectly clearly, but there’s a dowdy feel to it that silver inserts and chrome rings aren’t enough to lift.

More pleasing to at least one of our testers were the seats, which have a body-hugging sports-style design and are finished in tough fabric rather than the almost unavoidable leather. Behind them, rear-seat passengers get more legroom than you’d expect, though they’ll still feel cramped thanks to the restricted headroom a low roofline dictates.

For cargo rather than people, the seats fold near-flat in one movement to create a decent load bay. The rear floor also lifts to reveal a hidden stowage space that’s big enough to be really useful.
