MERCEDES G-Class review

After ten years away, Merc’s legendary G-Wagen has just returned to the UK as a right-hand drive model. Sold only by one dealer, it’s set to remain as rare as ever – not least because it’s priced from £79,975 in passenger-carrying form. Recognising the vehicle’s potential as a work truck, Merc also offers a lower-spec commercial model… at a mere £57,975. Scarcely less relevant to most 4x4 van buyers, you’d think, will be the range-topping AMG model, with its turbocharged 5.4-litre V8 petrol engine, 17.8mpg fuel consumption and, £114,975 price tag.

The G-Wagen does retain the off-road technology that made it famous, along with a level of equipment that’s high even by Merc’s standards. Naturally, it’s been heavily updated since it was last available in RHD form, too, and with the 350 CDI engine that’s also used in the M-Class it’ll return 25mpg as well as hitting 62mph in less than 10 seconds. All you need now is eighty grand.
