Jeep’s a company that’s had a lot of hits over the years, and a few misses. The original Compass, which appeared in 2007 as part of a product offensive which at its peak saw the American brand offering no less than seven different models in the UK, which very much one of the latter. As product offensives go, it was definitely an offensive product.
It should concern you (it did us) that the new Compass, which comes to the UK a couple of years after the old one was pulled, is actually just a revised version of the same car. But don’t write it off for that alone. Having fielded an onslaught of brickbats for what was a thoroughly unpleasant machine, they’ve set about sorting out everything that was wrong with it. And in the main, they’ve put it right.
Rather than dwelling on the original’s shortcomings, which could take a while, let’s look at this new Compass from scratch. First thing to note is how similar it looks to the new Grand Cherokee; Jeep’s halo model hasn’t even gone on sale here yet, and they’re already trading off the back of it.
