Buying an off-roader?

If you've got the off-road bug and want to know which 4x4 to buy, the choice of vehicles available on the second-hand market has never been so great. Some make great daily drivers, too, while others aren't as civilised on tarmac but might turn out to be much easier to modify for added fun in the mud. The world is your oyster…

Twenty or so years ago, when 4x4s first became trendy, manufacturers came out with a steady stream of new vehicles that promised to 'go anywhere' and never saw anything more taxing than a school run or shopping trip. Now, those original Discoverys, Cherokees, Shoguns, Troopers, Fronteras and so on have come tumbling down in price - to the extent that if you're looking for an affordable, real-world 4x4, you've never had it so good.

Most likely, you fancy the idea of buying an everyday car that'll also give you a whole lot of good times off-road. Or maybe you've got a daily driver already, but you like the idea of splashing a few hundred quid on something that'll be no more than a hobby. At the other end of the scale, perhaps you're in the mood to spend strong money on a vehicle that's going to be a lifelong companion.

Either way, time was that your choice would have been very limited indeed. No longer. There are loads of 4x4s available under a grand now, as well as plenty of very sound second-owner vehicles just begging for someone to come along and help them fulfil their potential. And in between these two extremes, there's an enormous variety of vehicles to choose from if you want a road-going toy you can drive to work every day and still have fun in at the weekend.

Most people stick to just a few tried-and-trusted brands when it comes to choosing an off-roader. But there's no need to follow the herd. Going with a mainstream badge will certainly make it easier when you go shopping for modifications, but most of the vehicles here will put a big smile on your face even in standard form. It's all down to personal taste - as well as budget, of course. But while money does help, you don't really need all that much of it to have a whale of a time in your 4x4 - just so long as you shop wisely in the first place and get the one that's right for you.
